Publishing guide
Publish your adventure on Familiar.
Adventures written by hand, created in the desktop app, and developed with Familiar skills are all welcome. Choose the preparation path that fits your work, then publish the same two reviewed PDFs.
Publish a beginner booklet.
Choose the beginner booklet format to share a free digital adventure. Upload the complete 16-page, 5.5 × 8.5 inch PDF, including its cover, and a separate single-page front-cover PDF of the same size.
Keep the booklet at its original size and page count. Readers can preview, download and print it at home. Marketplace paperback ordering is available for the US Letter format below.
Publish work made with your own tools.
You can write and lay out the entire adventure yourself. Familiar’s marketplace accepts prepared PDFs; it does not require a Familiar campaign, native bundle, or AI-generated content.
- Export a US Letter (8.5 × 11 inch) interior PDF with 32–800 pages, in a multiple of four. If the adventure is shorter, add useful, clearly labeled notes pages in your layout tool.
- Prepare a single-page full-wrap cover PDF including the back, spine, and front. Its dimensions must match the paperback product and your exact interior page count. A front-cover image alone is not sufficient.
- Keep each PDF at or below 40 MB. Use static PDFs without embedded attachments or active actions. Review all pages, artwork, margins, and player-facing material.
- Upload both files, describe the adventure, and confirm permission to share and print all included text and artwork.
If you need help producing the matching cover, the skills toolkit can prepare one using the print service’s dimensions. You can supply your existing interior PDF without generating a new adventure.
Upload my prepared PDFs →Prepare a book with Familiar.
In Familiar desktop, open your module, format it for print, and choose Order printed book. Prepare the interior and cover, then open both PDFs to review them. You do not need to purchase a copy to publish a listing.
In the skills edition, ask your agent: “Prepare my reviewed module as a US Letter paperback with a full-wrap cover, and tell me where both PDFs are saved.” The toolkit’s cover command returns the prepared interior and cover paths.
Use the prepared print interior: a paperback needs at least 32 pages, in a multiple of four. Familiar adds labeled Session Notes pages to a separate print copy when needed. Your original reading PDF stays unchanged.
Review the read-aloud passages, tables, art, and cover. The marketplace checks PDF structure, page count, trim, and matching cover dimensions. Those checks do not review the story or grant rights to its content.
Publish when you’re ready.
Add your title, creator name, summary, game system, and the two approved PDFs on the publishing page. Confirm that you have permission to share and print all included content.
Publishing makes the PDFs public and free to read, and permits Familiar to sell printed copies through its existing checkout. Buyers pay the displayed printing and delivery price. This beta does not pay author royalties.
Sign in or create an account before uploading. Familiar uses Clerk for secure sign-in and account recovery. Your email stays private; choose any public creator name. Sign in with the same email on another browser to find your connected modules. Your uploads stay private until publication.
Manage your listing.
Use My listings to withdraw or republish. Withdrawal stops discovery, hosted downloads, and new marketplace orders. Existing approved orders remain fulfillable unless Familiar blocks the module. Copies readers already downloaded cannot be recalled.
Published before publisher accounts? My listings finds creator keys saved in this browser. Sign in and choose “Connect my saved modules,” or import your downloaded key JSON file. Connecting preserves your module page, PDFs, favorites, and current visibility. Once connected, your publisher account replaces the old key for account access. If you have lost both your key and its backup, contact Familiar; an email address alone cannot prove ownership.
Published print files cannot be silently replaced. Publish a new listing when you release a revised book.
Favoriting a module also upvotes it. Favorites are saved in the current browser, with one favorite per module per browser identity. Clearing cookies resets that identity. Use “Report this module” for a rights or content concern; reports enter Familiar’s review queue.
