Familiar skills edition
Your agent. Familiar’s publishing tools.
Install the creative and publishing skills together. They share the desktop app’s fonts, PDF renderer, campaign files, and print service.

- Install Node.js 22+, Python 3.10+, and Poppler. On macOS, use
brew install poppler; on Debian or Ubuntu, usesudo apt install poppler-utils. On Windows, add your Poppler installation’s bin directory to PATH. - Download and extract the ZIP. Use the agent selector on the download page to copy your installation command. Run it inside the extracted
familiar-skillsfolder. - Run the setup and doctor commands printed by the installer. Setup installs PDF dependencies in a private Python environment. Doctor identifies anything still missing.
- Restart your agent. Ask it to use Familiar to develop an adventure and format it for print.
For a project-only install, add --project /path/to/project. To update a previous Familiar-managed installation, back up customizations and add --replace. Your agent supplies its own AI account and permissions.
Create, review, and format
Start with a premise or an existing native Familiar campaign folder. Choose the hook before drafting. Familiar’s skills guide the editorial review; its toolkit checks and saves the linked artifacts, builds a native bundle, and formats the PDF.
The output includes page previews and layout checks. Inspect the actual PDF, especially tables, read-aloud boxes, maps, dense pages, and player handouts. Keep DM-only material out of player copies. Open the same campaign in Familiar desktop whenever you want the visual workspace.
Share beyond your table
Keep the native bundle for moving your campaign between Familiar tools. To publish in the marketplace, prepare and review the interior and full-wrap cover PDFs, then upload them on the publishing page. Handwritten and skills-assisted adventures follow the same path.

Order your printed book
- Ask the agent to check the Familiar print service, then provide your print product, quantity, destination, and shipping choice. Current formatted interiors use US Letter size.
- The toolkit prepares a full-wrap cover at the service’s exact dimensions. You may provide your own correctly sized cover PDF.
- Review the interior, cover, and quoted total. Confirm explicitly when you are ready to order.
- Open the checkout link and pay in your browser. The agent uploads the unchanged reviewed PDFs after payment and can retrieve order status.
Physical printing is paid separately. Service readiness and sandbox/production mode are reported by the toolkit; a sandbox order does not manufacture a book. Provider credentials and pricing remain on Familiar’s server.
If something needs attention
Missing skill: restart your agent and check its skills directory. Failed layout: fix the reported issue and inspect the new proof. Expired quote or edited PDF: request a fresh quote and approve the new files. Uncertain checkout response: reconcile the existing order before retrying.
Keep the private order receipts under .familiar/codex/skills/print/ out of shared folders and Git. Share the exported bundle directory instead. The download includes the full command guide.
